Alfred Kluwick (28 June 1942 – 2 February 2022)

With deep sadness, we announce that the renowned fluid mechanician Alfred Kluwick, a former member of the IUTAM Bureau (2004-2008) and Congress Committee (1998-2010), as well as a member of the General Assembly (1990-2020) and Electoral Committee (2014-2018) of IUTAM, passed away on 2 February 2022.

His research focused on aerodynamics and nonlinear wave propagation, which included laminar and turbulent boundary layer flows, shock wave-boundary layer interaction, transonic flows and dynamics of real fluids. He held numerous official positions at his home Technische Universität (TU) Wien, and was involved in the activities of many international organizations, including the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine (CISM). He mentored 24 doctoral students and received many awards for his scientific achievements. His passing is a great loss for the mechanics community, by which he will be sorely missed.

More information about Alfred Kluwick’s life and work, both scientific and organizational, can be found in his obituary published by CISM at https://www.cism.it/en/news/memoriam-alfred-kluwick/.
