The highest authority of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) is its General Assembly. The IUTAM General Assembly has the power to decide all questions affecting the Union.
The major category of members of the IUTAM General Assembly with voting rights is composed of representatives of the Adhering Organizations. An Adhering Organization is an organization of scientists in mechanics representing (independent scientific activity in) a country or a definite territory.
Another category of members of the IUTAM General Assembly is composed of Members-at-Large. Members-at-Large are elected by the General Assembly based upon their service for IUTAM.
Affiliated Organizations of the Union are international organizations mainly occupied in sub-fields of mechanics or fields closely related to that of the Union. Each Affiliated Organization is represented in the IUTAM General Assembly by an observer having no voting rights.
Whereas the IUTAM General Assembly is the organ that makes decisions concerning IUTAM, the execution of these decisions rests with the IUTAM Bureau, which is elected by the General Assembly for a four-year period. Members of the Bureau are automatically members of the General Assembly.
Every two years the IUTAM General Assembly decides on a list of IUTAM-sponsored Symposia or instructional Summer Schools. The General Assembly calls upon the advice of two Symposia Panels, one in the field of fluid mechanics and one in the field of solid mechanics. The members of the Symposia Panels are elected by the General Assembly for a four-year period.
The General Assembly establishes a standing Congress Committee that is responsible for the organization of International Congresses of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM) at four-year intervals. The Congress Committee appoints an Executive Committee (XCCC) to take all necessary actions on its behalf in the period between two successive congresses.
The printed output of the Union consists of its publications. Five categories of IUTAM publications can be distinguished, i.e. Annual Reports, Newsletters, Proceedings of IUTAM Symposia, ICTAM Proceedings and Publications on the history of IUTAM.
