Who we are

We are an international non-governmental, non-profit, scientific organisation that promotes theoretical and applied mechanics as a scientific discipline by organising congresses, symposia and summer schools.

Our Mission Is Simple
How It All Began

The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) was founded in 1946 as an international non-governmental non-profit scientific organisation. On 4 November 2022 it was incorporated as an Association with full legal status in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Diversity & Discrimination

IUTAM values Diversity as a supporting principle for pursuing the objectives of IUTAM and maintaining the highest standards in all its activities. IUTAM understands Diversity as the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, gender, age, subject of expertise and geographic representation.

IUTAM shall observe the basic policy of non-discrimination and affirm the rights of scientists to engage in international scientific activity without regard to race, religion, political philosophy, ethnic origin, citizenship, language, sex, disability or age.

Statement on Ukraine

The Board of Directors of IUTAM made the following statement on 21 March 2022:

The unprovoked Russian attack on the independent country of Ukraine violates international law and has led to a large-scale humanitarian crisis. The invasion is an assault on academic freedom and on the opportunities for international scientific interchange. IUTAM stands in solidarity with the scientific community in Ukraine and acknowledges those Russian scientists who are opposed to this attack
