IUTAM-CISM Summer School on Multi-field problems across different scales – materials for the development of green technologies

24-28 Jun 2024
CISM, Udine, Italy
Symposium Chairperson: Prof. Jörg Schröder

The Summer School will take place from June 24 to 28, 2024, at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, Italy. The course emphasizes the importance of materials science and engineering advancements in achieving a sustainable society. It highlights the need for developing materials for energy applications such as energy conversion and storage (e.g., new magnets, batteries, and hydrogen tanks), as well as the creation of smart devices (e.g., sensors, and actuators).
Special attention is also given to understanding and modeling multi-field interactions across various scales, including electromagnetic, electromechanical, and chemomechanical aspects, which are essential for the functionality and durability of materials used in sustainable energy solutions.
The course addresses multiscale mathematical modeling, data analysis, and design strategies for multi-field materials, offering a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach encompassing experimental, theoretical, and computational methodologies. Key topics include continuum thermodynamics, numerical approaches, homogenization techniques, experimentally study of magnetism on atomic and macroscopic length scales, the molecular basis of coupled mechanisms based on ab initio methods, and case studies focusing on applications such as hydrogen embrittlement in steels and failures of solid electrolyte Li-ion batteries.
The course is aimed at university students and postdoctoral researchers from academia and industry who are interested in multi-physics analyses across different scales.
